Re-elected for my third term – thank you

I can now confirm that I have been re-elected to the City of Darwin council for the next four years. At the end of election day on 24 March, I had achieved the quota and technically was guaranteed to one of the three positions in the Waters Ward. However, as the polls did not close until 30 March to allow for postal votes to come in, I had to wait until then to be confirmed. The other two elected alderman in the ward, who had to rely on preferences to be elected are Robyn Leslie, who has also been re-elected and first time alderman, Gary Haslett.

The swearing in ceremony will take place tonight at the Civic Chambers.

Thank yo to the residents of the Waters Ward for your support.

Elections only days away – so where is the information on candidates.

Naturally, I have spent a lot of time out and about in the past few weeks. Pre-polling commenced earlier in the month in the city and is now in its second week at Casuarina Village.

People are coming up to me to vote at the early polling stations, saying that have no information on the candidates they are expected to vote for. In defence of all the candidates, most of us are planning letterbox drops in this the last week of the campaign. I’m sure by Friday, you’ll have more than enough. I accept that it is more difficult for those that need to vote early as they will not be available on the day.

Printing and postage is a big cost for all candidates, who in the main, are independents and pay for all election costs themselves. There is also a wisdom in local government elections not to send material out too early.

I have arranged for Australia Post to deliver my brochures to over 6,000 addresses in the ward this week. It was in my mailbox in Anula today. If you want to know more, please contact me by phone, email or this website.

Election Issues 2012: Saturday Parking

Some candidates (and existing aldermen) are calling for the scrapping of Saturday paid parking in the city. I say, have the debate again before making a decision. One of the reasons for paid parking was to free up some spaces on Saturday morning. Many of the bays were being used by staff, making it difficult for people wanting to go into the city to find a space near where they wanted to go.

I think Council could have done a much better job in getting the facts out there. The phrase often used by people is ‘I don’t go into the city on Saturday morning because I have to pay” is true and false at the same time.  True, because the inner city spots in Zone A and B are paid spots, but that’s all. Westlane and Chinatown carparks are free, the Post Office carpark is free, as are all of the off-street carparks. All Zone C bays are free – The Esplanade for example.. This is designed to free up bays for people who may only want to go into the city for a short time, do their business and leave.

If you want to linger a little longer, enjoy a coffee with friends etc, then walk just a little further from one of the many off street carparks.

The beauty of local government is our ability to react and make changes. Paid parking has been in place for over six months now and certainly worthy of discussion. I’ll make my decision when we have all the facts .

Election time again

I have re-nominated for a further term as your local alderman for Waters Ward on the Darwin City Council.  Each ward has three aldermen.  I have been privileged to be one of your alderman for the past eight years.

I still have the energy and enthusiasm to to carry out the duties of an elected member, which includes a mix of responsibilities such as formal council meetings, committee meetings, community activities, responding to local issues and continually seeking out opportunities to make Darwin a better place.
